Objective: Our Kitano Hospital in Osaka City is an acute care-type general hospital (designed for treating patients requiring acute care) with 741 beds. Since March 2004, we have been making an attempt to improve the working of the hospital by introducing a pharmaceutical management and counseling services super-support system (ICM. Inc.), with the aim of providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care, improving the efficiency of record-keeping, and improving the degree of patient satisfaction. After introduction of the system, we conducted a study to assess the improvements in the quality of medical care, management efficiency and patient satisfaction at our hospital, and report the results.
Methods: A host computer of the super-support system set in the Pharmacy Division was connected with an ordering system in the hospital, in order to collect orders. Since package inserts of drugs have been input in a database form in the super-support system, instantaneous totalization and extraction of side effects and interactions of the prescribed drugs, which are items for patient guidance, can be obtained. These functions are allowed with portable terminals, leading to confirmation of side effects and compliance at the bedside. Guidance records are automatically made in SOAP form by pen tapping of the necessary items at the portable terminals.
Results and Discussion: Introduction of the system of use of portable terminals has allowed the checkpoints at the time of the patient interview to be put in order, because any potential pharmaceutical problems, including side effects and drug interactions are automatically extracted by the newly introduced system. The time and labor required for recording of patient information and guidance were also shortened with the introduction of this system, which allows sharing and search of records. We intend to further improve the quality and efficiency of the pharmaceutical management and counseling services in the future.
